Cowboys look to erase memories of last season’s loss to Pahrump

By Danny Hubley

Chaparral welcomes Pahrump to Jack Mannion Stadium on Friday for the Cowboys first home game of the season. It is a rematch of last year, which didn’t go the Cowboys way as the Trojans defeated Chaparral 28-21.

This year, coach Paul Nihipali said the Cowboys will try and forget what happened last season give the circumstances are far different than last year.

“We don’t have to travel a hour to Pahrump that kind of takes a lot out of us,” he said. “We had sickness and illness, but that is just excuses.

Fans who attend the game will receive a rally towel, similar to what professional teams give their fans during playoff runs.

“I like it. It’s creative,” senior Trayvius Hodge said. “It makes you feel like you’re in the league.”

Pahrump offers a different challenge for the Cowboys due to the nature of the Trojan offense – the double-wing.

“Pahrump is going to be disciplined and different from what Bonanza showed us, so we got fit some new players that have never played,” Nihipali said.

Additionally, the Cowboys have plenty of work to do on the offensive side of the ball.

The Cowboys offense last week in its 14-6 victory over Bonanza was sluggish in the first half, as sophomore quarterback Lopu “Joe” Tauili’ili and the rest of the team just couldn’t get anything going.

Whatever little they did get going, however, was called back due to mental errors.

“We had big runs, but penalties really stopped us,” Hodge said.

Nihipali wants to cut back on those, especially if the Cowboys want to experience success in their first home game of the season.

“The main thing we are going do this week is cut down are mistakes,” he said. “Make sure everyone is on the same page. Make sure everyone stays healthy. Make sure we get our assignments done and things that won’t hurt us.”
